When the clients, who have three children, purchased this luxurious spec house, they were responding to the convenient floor plan and sweeping volumes. The interior finishes, however, needed more attention, which is where we entered the picture. Because we were not redesigning the home’s architecture, we needed to work around some existing challenges. The tall ceilings, for example, needed to connect visually with the walls so as to be impactful instead of disjointed. Accordingly, we used a reflective, almost iridescent Venetian plaster infused with crushed mother-of-pearl. Another challenge centered on the fireplace in the living room, which had a disproportionate hearth and firebox. These two components were brought into an appropriate ratio of scale by using mirror--cut and beveled into staggered bricks--up and down the hearth. Furnishings and accessories, meanwhile, impart the relaxed glamour and sexiness the clients desired.
